Exploring Values in Wet Pastel

Offered in conjunction with the exhibition, “Depictions: Earth, Life, and Our Shared Responsibility,” on Saturday, April 13, 2024, Indiana artist Avon Waters led a group in painting scenes in nature with soft pastels along with gesso, water, and alcohol. Participants used “wet pastel” techniques while gaining an understanding of how to approach values in pastel– what Avon refers to as “a tonalistic approach to painting.” Because pastel requires layering rather than mixing, understanding how to interpret values is especially important.

The workshop took place in the Arts Alliance Center in Bloomington, IN, surrounded by the artwork of Artists for Climate Awareness members participating in the show.
