“Nature Walk” — a Musical Journey
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, an audience of 20 attended “Nature Walk” at the Bloomington, IN Pillar Arts Alliance Center, engaging in nature through the melodies of IU’s talented students and faculty. The event was coordinated and hosted by Artists for Climate Awareness and funded through IU Jacobs School of Music.
Inspired by an early spring nature walk led by Distinguished IU Biology Professor Roger Hangarter, this unique performance, depicting nature’s beauty and complexity, showcased IU students’ creativity. To capture the essence of the natural world, students crafted musical pieces based on their experiences during the hike, and they wrote compositions based on these writings. The instruments delicately depicted noises such as newly emerging frogs and running water.
On behalf of the Student Composers Association at IU, Jacobs School of Music student composer Thejas Mirle organized the musical performance based on these creative works, and the composers led an ensemble in playing the compositions. Composers were: Elijah Culp; Steven Naylor; Zhu Rui; and Timothy Reinholz; Instrumentalists were: Violin I: Yue Ning; Violin II: Jose Eserjose; Viola: Sinead Whelan; Cello: Johanna Di Norcia.
As an introduction, Professor Hangarter shared images, biological information, and insights about the wildlife encountered during the hike.
