“Nature Walk”: Music and Science Come Together

Inspired by an early spring outing led by Distinguished IU Biology Professor Roger Hangarter, this unique musical performance depicts the seasonal re-awakening of nature in southern Indiana. Dr. Hangarter has led IU Student composers on a hike where they observe life in ponds and fields and then compose musical pieces based on their experiences during the hike.
During the performance, Professor Hangarter will share images and insights about the wildlife encountered during the hike.
These two identical concerts reflect the theme of the Brushes for a Better Planet Co-lab, where artists shadow scientists as they conduct their research. The goal is to enhance understanding the world though scientific observation as depicted by art. The Co-lab exhibition is part of the Artists for Climate Awareness Earth Month show at Pillar Arts Alliance in Bloomington, Indiana.
On behalf of the Student Composers Association at Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music student composer Thejas Mirle has organized the musical performance based on the creative works and will lead an ensemble in playing the compositions. Composers are Noah Burns, Jacob Lisiewski, Alexey Logunov, and Emmet Lewis. Instrumentalists are TBD.
This will be the beginning of the Co-lab Art Show Reception, also on April 19 at 3 pm.
Join us as we bring these musical creations to life. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature through the eyes, words, and melodies of IU’s talented students and faculty. Mark your calendars and prepare for a memorable journey.
