SUMMARY:Ceremony for Our Land - Performance by IU Music Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:As part of opening reception of “Distant Thunder” Gallery Exhibition of climate art  \nJoin us for a unique live arts event in Bloomington\, IN at the Arts Alliance Center. \n \nBuilding upon Ceremony for Earth\, which was featured in April 2024\, this interarts collaboration\, led by Grace McKenzie and Daixuan Ai\, IU Jacobs School of Music\, explores how mindfulness practice can deepen the experience of live music – both for performers and listeners. Through this project\, they weave their insights into an immersive\, contemplative performance that invites the audience into a space of stillness and reflection.\n \nAt the heart of this event is an exploration of land\, place\, and belonging. Four artists from diverse backgrounds – spanning different regions of the country and the world – come together in Bloomington\, Indiana\, to engage in a shared inquiry: What significance does this land hold for you? How did you arrive here? How do you care for this land? Who has called it home before you?\n \nThrough a live poetry reading by Wahpe Clifford and Ash Iteska\, accompanied by electronic soundscapes and evocative imagery\, the performance creates a layered\, immersive experience. Every note played is improvised\, making each moment ephemeral and unrepeatable – an experience shaped by presence\, connection\, and reflection.\n \nWe invite you to step into this space\, to listen\, to feel\, and to reflect on the land beneath your feet and the histories it carries.\n \nFREE TO THE PUBLIC

SUMMARY:Nature Walk: A Musical Journey
DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of “Nature Walk\,” where music\, writing\, and visuals come together. \nInspired by an enlightening nature walk led by Distinguished IU Biology Professor Roger Hangarter\, this unique performance depicting nature’s beauty and complexity showcases IU students’ creativity in both writing and music. To capture the essence of the natural world\, writing students crafted literary pieces based on their experiences during the hike\, and musicians have written compositions based on these writings. On behalf of the Student Composers Association at IU\, Jacobs School of Music student composer Thejas Mirle has organized a musical performance based on these creative works and will lead an ensemble in playing the compositions. Composers are: Elijah Culp; Steven Naylor; Timothy Reinholz; and Zhu Rui. Instrumentalists are: Violin I: Yue Ning; Violin II: Jose Eserjose; Viola: Sinead Whelan; Cello: Johanna Di Norcia. \nJoin us as we bring these creations to life.
