SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibition: "Living In the Questions\," Traverse City\, MI
DESCRIPTION:What questions are you holding on to? \nOur world can be defined by questions – personal\, communal and global. Through the lens of nature\, “Living In the Questions” asks you to pay attention and examine the space that our queries hold.   \nWe are bearing witness to dramatic changes on our planet and to the impact of those changes on all living creatures. While viewing the exhibit\, pause\, observe and reflect – feel the sense of interconnectedness between ourselves and all that exists. Wander through the paintings\, sculptures\, and poetry as a meditation on climate change. See and feel the joys and sorrows. Let the experience expand your awareness. What questions come up for you? Can you feel the push and the pull\, the unease and the beauty of the world we encounter? \nThis exhibition\, by Michigan artist Jessica Kovan\, opens on June 25 at Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park in Traverse City\, MI.  \nThe art in this exhibit has been created on and with all recycled materials including canvases\, cardboard\, old book pages\, and salvaged wood. \n \n \n \n \n \n Reception for “Living In the Questions”\nJuly 22\, 2024\, 5-7 pmBotanic Garden at Historic Barns Park1490 Red Dr\, Traverse City\, MI 49684Catered by Inn and Trail Gourmet \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Proudly co-sponsored by \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica Kovan is a mixed media artist and educator\, aiming to create conversations to foster both collective and personal understanding. SUMMARY:Workshop: Exploring Values in Wet Pastel
DESCRIPTION:With Avon Waters  \nOffered in conjunction with the gallery show\, “Depictions: Earth\, Life\, and Our Shared Responsibility.” \nMake more dynamic paintings and take your medium to new heights. Indiana artist Avon Waters will be leading this all-day\, hands-on Saturday workshop\, painting scenes in nature. In this workshop\, you learn how to see and use values to make your art impactful while you explore new techniques and refine those you already use. As you work\, you will explore how to connect your art to conservation while you depict nature’s connectivity to life. \nAvon will employ “wet pastel” techniques\, focusing on controlling values – “a tonalistic approach to painting” that works for all 2-D mediums\, although he will work in pastels mixed with specific mediums. This workshop is perfect for those who consider themselves beginning artists to seasoned painters. Because the medium can be worked at varying levels of dryness-to-wetness and can be brushed\, the techniques and processes will resonate with painters who work in watercolor\, gouache\, acrylic\, and oil. See more about wet pastel techniques here: https://thepastelartist.co.uk/painting-with-pastel/ \nBring your own soft pastels. See the SUPPLY LIST. \nAvon Waters is a Pastel Society of America juried member\, the lead artist and contact for the Indiana Waterways Art Project\, and is the CEO of the non-profit\, Art Nature Consortium \nLearn more about Avon Waters at \n\nhttps://www.avonwaters.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/avonwatersfinearts\n Instagram: @avonwatersarts\n\nSee photos of our wet pastel workshop led by Avon Waters in March of 2023.\n \n________________\nFee: $65 for active members of Artists for Climate Awareness or Arts Alliance of Greater Bloomington. SUMMARY:Evoking A Response to Climate Change with the Fine Arts (Online and In-person)
DESCRIPTION:Both online and in-person: Climate change is real. This presentation\, “The Fine Arts: Evoking a Response to Climate Change” is an interplay of scientific and artistic visuals curated and presented by Ben Brabson\, climate scientist and Emeritus Professor of Physics at Indiana University. \n Studies show that using art for communication can raise awareness\, provoke impactful dialogue\, and inspire action about environmental issues. Brabson’s talk includes engaging and artful illustrations that simplify concepts of climate change for ordinary people\, making the concepts more concrete\, meaningful\, and motivating. \nThe intersection of the arts and climate change is a vital and dynamic space where creativity\, expression\, and activism come together. Artists play a crucial role in addressing climate change by harnessing their unique abilities to engage emotions\, challenge perspectives\, and ignite social change. This presentation incorporates several pieces by Artists for Climate Awareness.  \nThe presentation is free and is offered both in-person and online. Those who register to attend virtually will receive a Zoom link. \nRegister for the Event \n\n Artists for Climate Awareness is pleased to offer this workshop as part of its series to help artists learn how to use art as a way to bring social awareness to conservation efforts in your communities. \n\nWith thanks and appreciation to: \n\n\n\n \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Banneker Kids Camp 2023
DESCRIPTION:2023 Banneker Camp\n\nOn a warm week in July of 2023\, two Artists for Climate Awareness members led participants of Banneker Kid’s Camp in Bloomington\, IN in outdoor craft activities related to the environment. \n\nOn July 11\, Sara Steffey McQueen led the group in making baskets and ropes from cattails and willows.\nOn July 14\, Chandra Craig Rettinger led the kids in an activity entitled\, “The Frog\, the Bee & the Tree in a Happy Habitat of Three.”\n\nRead the descriptions below! \n  \n\n\n                        \n\n \n \n\nOn July 11\, Sara Steffey McQueen explained the importance of cattail plants in the ecosystem and recommended when possible to make things from available natural resources instead of buying them. It was a warm day in the shade and the kids preferred physical activity to a sedentary craft\, so the group used a handcrafted willow rope  to do the Limbo dance! The top four winners received the four available cattail heads. \n  \nOn July 14\, Chandra Craig Rettinger opened with a brief talk on the meanings of ecological and biological terms and why these are important for a healthy planet. As the children crafted frogs\, toads\, bees\, and trees from recyclable materials\, they talked about biomes\, habitats\, and ecosystems and learned about symbiosis. After the creations were made\, the group placed their creations into their respective habitats in the garden.

SUMMARY:Anne Farley Gaines Ceramic Demonstration (Free)
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\n\nArtists for Climate Awareness and the Ivy Tech Center for Lifelong Learning are excited to invite Chicago artist\, Anne Farley Gaines\, into the Ivy Tech Ceramics Studio this summer for a free one-day demonstration in which Anne will produce a lively ceramic work based on one of her watercolors of nature! \nAnne Farley Gaines uses the emotional language of art with thematic environmental education. Her subjects focus on her passions: disappearing coastlines of the Great Lakes\, decaying trees uprooted by rising waters from glacier melt\, animal species being pushed by climate change to unprecedented areas\, forest fires\, violent storms\, and their aftermath. Recently\, on a trip through the mid-south Into Florida\, Anne journaled her observations of climate change in the regions. Her ceramic pieces will be wall plaques of plants in nature\, and will be based on the watercolors she created. \nThis demonstration will accompany a display of Anne’s work on campus and at The Waldron Arts Center\, which will be available for viewing throughout June and July. \nLearn more about Anne Farley Gaines at https://www.annefarleygaines.com/. \n\n \nThe Mission of Artists for Climate Awareness is to provide education and awareness of environmental concerns and climate change. In the context of learning artistic techniques\, we discuss how our art can serve civic engagement. Accordingly\, there will be some related discussion. \nArtists for Climate Awareness is a 501(c)3 organization and cannot advocate for any partisan cause. Artists for Climate Awareness is pleased to offer this workshop as part of its series to help artists learn how to use art as a way to bring social awareness to conservation efforts in your communities. \n\n\nWith thanks and appreciation to:\n \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Painting Nature in Wet Pastel by Avon Waters: Two-Day Workshop

SUMMARY:Painting Deserts in Watercolor: Nancy Davis Metz with Carol Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Deserts are often overlooked when it comes to changes in climate\, but in fact they are among the most vulnerable places on Earth. Majestic saguaro cacti\, Joshua trees\, and giant sequoia trees are challenged by unusually dry and hot conditions\, increased carbon dioxide\, and invasive plants. Several desert bird species are endangered. \nIn this day-long watercolor workshop\, you will learn how to paint a sunlit desert landscape using a very limited set of colors along with special wet-in-wet and layering techniques. Through the activities you will explore various watercolor properties and how to manipulate them. As you paint\, you will learn how humans are restoring and preserving these important areas of our world and how you can help. \nThe class will be taught both in-person and via Zoom. It is aimed at serving those who are comfortable with beginning watercolor techniques as well as more experienced painters who are interested in expanding their approaches to color management and brushwork. Participants will receive a list of the recommended paints\, along with purchasing options. All participants will provide their own painting supplies (brushes\, palette\, etc.). \nInstructors Nancy Metz and Carol Rhodes will deliver this workshop. \nSee all Ivy Tech CLL classes and register now \nDirect Link to register for “Painting Deserts” workshop \n\nArtists for Climate Awareness is pleased to offer this workshop as part of its series to help artists learn how to use art as a way to bring social awareness to conservation efforts in your communities.\nAs such\, a portion of the workshop fee will go toward a Contributors membership in Artists for Climate Awareness.\n Each participant will be automatically considered a member of Artists for Climate Awareness at the Contributor’s level (equivalent to $35) for one year\, unless declined.
