SUMMARY:Saving the Hoosier: The Concert
DESCRIPTION:Help people fight to save the Hoosier National Forest and attend “Saving the Hoosier: The Concert”! The event will feature Hoosier musicians Sarah Flint and Jeff Shew\, and audience members will see a sneak peek of scenes from the film and meet narrator Hud Mellencamp. The new documentary film “Saving the Hoosier: The Fight for America’s Forests” is produced by Bloomington-based Women with Guts Productions. With Artists for Climate Awareness as fiscal sponsor for the film\, all donations are tax-deductible. \n\nLearn more and find out how to donate to the project HERE.\nTickets for the concert are $30\, and include beverages and pizza\, generously donated by Pizza X. Audience members will be invited to participate in a sing-along of the Indiana state song that will be used in the film. \nBesides Flint and Shew\, the soundtrack for Saving the Hoosier will include music from Krista Detor\, Carrie Newcomer\, Charlie Jesseph and Busman’s Holiday. \nSaving the Hoosier follows environmental activists who\, through grassroots education and lawsuits\, have successfully protected the Hoosier National Forest from the US Forest Service’s plans for commercial logging and prescribed burns to benefit timber sales. The Save Hoosier National Forest movement has received broad nonpartisan support\, and other Hoosier heavyweights have lent their voice to back activists\, like Angelo Pizzo\, writer and producer of films including Hoosiers and Rudy\, and producer\, educator and activist Anna Strout Eisenberg. \nExecutive producer and founder of Women with Guts Productions Rachael Himsel is hopeful about the impact the film will have on the larger\, national environmental movement: “Indiana has set the stage before by creating crucial policies that protected our woods\, water and air and served as an example to other states. But it hasn’t been enough – our state still has some of the highest rates of pollution in the country. We know that our forests filter and clean our air and water\, and we spoke with scientists who discussed this process in-depth.This film gives voice to the people and groups who are fighting for our forests and our future.” \nHimsel and the crew have been working on the film for more than a year\, completing more than a dozen interviews with scientists\, activists and political leaders including Indiana Governor Mike Braun. David Yosha\, founder of Magnet Films is co-producing the documentary\, with Alex Johnson on camera crew. The production team includes Jennifer Wagner of Mass Ave PR and digital specialist Polina Shumanova. Advisors include Steven Stewart of Protect Our Woods and entertainment marketing executive Frank Chiocchi\, with original artwork by Bonnie Gordon-Lucas. To date\, the entire team has been working pro-bono on the film. Himsel is hopeful that this spotlight on preserving our public lands will help the team reach their fundraising goal. \nJohn Mellencamp has generously agreed to donate use of his music for Saving the Hoosier while Hud Mellencamp\, Duke University graduate and entrepreneur\, will narrate the film. \n“Saving the Hoosier: The Concert” will be held at Pillar Arts Alliance Center in College Mall\, 2894 E. 3rd Street in Bloomington. \nBuy tickets here! https://savingthehoosier.eventbrite.com\nBuy Tickets Here!\n  \nFor more info on the film\, visit SavingTheHoosier.com\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the People\n \nABOUT HUD MELLENCAMP \nHailing from Bloomington\, Indiana\, Hud Mellencamp has always embraced a diverse range of experiences. SUMMARY:Art Show\, "Art as Inquiry\," (with Climate Co-lab)
DESCRIPTION: Artists for Climate Awareness is hosting a show of climate art in the Arts Alliance Center in Bloomington\, Indiana and online.\nThe exhibition\, named “Art as Inquiry”\, is displaying 2-D and 3-D artwork April 2-29\, 2026 at the  Pillar Arts Alliance Center in the College Mall\, Bloomington\, IN. This juried show\, a featured part of our Earth Month celebrations\, is intended to raise awareness about urgent climate and environmental issues through artistic expression and community engagement. The show represents 25 Artists for Climate Awareness members in several states. \n\n\n\n\nThe theme is intended to make climate-related research more accessible through the experience of art. As of April 19\, Artwork produced by the Climate Co-lab\, through Brushes for a Better Planet\, will join the exhibition\, and these artworks will be displayed alongside the Art as Inquiry works. The Climate Co-lab holds its reception on April 19. \nOur Co-lab hackathon event involves collaboration of artists and Indiana University scientists in March of 2026. During the first phase\, artists shadowed scientists as they collected data for their research. Subsequently\, the artist and the scientist co-created art (performance included) to represent the scientific endeavor or finding. Learn more here. \nArt\, especially\, can turn scientific knowledge into experiences that resonate emotionally—offering insights that facts and figures alone can’t always reach. When these perspectives come together\, they open up fresh ways of seeing and help people connect more deeply with complex ideas. Through this collaboration\, we transform scientific research into accessible\, emotional\, and community-rooted narratives. The hackathon is organized by Lily Shan of Brushes for a Better Planet\, and is sponsored by Artists for Climate Awareness. \nThe month-long event will host additional climate awareness events\, including: \n\nApril 12 – “Nature Walk\,” a musical and narrative presentation at the Arts Alliance Center; 2-3 pm. SUMMARY:RECEPTION for "Climate Co-lab" art & science project work\, with "Art as Inquiry" artworks
DESCRIPTION:Discover “Climate Co‑lab\,” part of “Art as Inquiry\,” an inspiring exhibition of 2‑D and 3‑D artwork presented at the  Pillar Arts Alliance Center in the College Mall\, Bloomington\, IN. The April 19 reception showcases work created by six artists and a group of musicians collaborating with Indiana University scientists\, and who have translated their shared research outings into art. The project is ACA-hosted and organized by Lily Shan with Brushes for a Better Planet. This artist-scientist project follows a “hackathon” model—adapted from software development—to spark rapid\, idea‑driven collaboration between artists and researchers. \nAfter a short introduction at 3pm\, a group of composers and musicians from Indiana University will perform Nature Walk\, a musical and visual presentation inspired by an early spring outing led by Distinguished IU Biology Professor Roger Hangarter. This unique performance depicts the seasonal re-awakening of nature in southern Indiana. \nFollowing the performance\, visitors are invited to enjoy refreshments and experience the artworks of the Brushes for a Better Planet project\, along with invited artwork by 25 Artists for Climate Awareness members\, in a sister show called “Art as Inquiry.” \nThe larger multi‑state climate‑art exhibition\, “Art as Inquiry\,” is a key event of ACA’s annual Earth Month programming. Together\, the shows aim to make climate‑related research more accessible and resonant through the experience of art. The public is warmly invited\, and admission is free. \nThe Projects:\nAs part of Climate Co‑lab: Art as Inquiry\, six Indiana‑based scientists are opening their field sites\, labs\, and community partnerships to artists. Each artist will shadow their assigned researcher for a day of hands‑on fieldwork\, then create a collaborative artwork inspired by the the experience. These new works will be exhibited at the Pillar Arts Alliance Center along with the larger “Art as Inquiry” show. \nTogether\, the projects explore climate\, ecology\, resilience\, and community through diverse scientific lenses: \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nUrban Forestry & Community Engagement: Artists join Canopy Bloomington as they plant trees in urban neighborhoods and share education about the role of canopy cover in community health.\nStormwater & Bioswale Research: Fieldwork includes studying water infiltration\, pollutant removal\, plant performance\, and the ecological design of bioswales—systems that protect waterways and support resilient urban landscapes.\nFoodways\, Memory & Urban Agriculture: Artists visit Hilltop’s Healing Garden to explore food culture\, community engagement\, and pedagogical work rooted in culinary memory and sustainable growing practices.\nEnvironmental Justice & Industrial History: Researchers and artists travel through southern Indiana to document the region’s industrial legacy\, public‑health challenges\, and the resilience of communities like SWICQL who continue to fight for environmental quality.\nAvian Behavior & Adaptation: Artists observe tree swallows as they return to Bloomington\, explore nest boxes\, and solve problem‑solving “puzzles\,” offering a window into resilience and learning in a changing world.\nFloral Diversity & Evolution: In labs and greenhouses\, artists examine flowers from the genetic to the ecosystem scale—studying cell types\, nectaries\, and the astonishing diversity that shapes pollinator interactions and global biodiversity.\nSoundscapes & Amphibian Ecology: Composers accompany biologists to early‑spring ponds\, recording frogs and other aquatic life to transform natural soundscapes into new ensemble works.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Confirmed Partners\n\nCanopy Bloomington\nOstrom Workshop\nEnvironment\, Society\, and Sustainability Institute\nJacobs’ School of Music\nArtists for Climate Awareness\nIU Creatives\nSidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art\n\n\nContact: Carol Rhodes\, at art4climate@carolrhodes.net\n\nWith thanks to our sponsors:

SUMMARY:Botanical Prints on Fabrics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this eco-printing class\, participants will learn to create intricate designs on silk using natural-vegetation pigments. The process is relatively simple: the combination of heat and pressure transfers the dye from leaves to fabric\, revealing the outline of the leaves and the patterns of veins.  In this workshop\, you will learn how to mordant (pre-treat) fabric\, test leaves for their color potential\, create a background color\, and layer\, roll\, and steam a fabric bundle. By the end of the workshop\, you will have the skills to use this technique confidently in your home studio. This process not only fosters a deep connection to nature and sustainable practices but also provides an opportunity to connect with others in the co-creation process. \n \n \n \n \n \n Kate Dolk-Ellis is a fiber artist best known for her work with natural dyes\, creating elegant art quilts and silk scarves. She specializes in botanical printing (also known as eco-printing\, a process that involves contact-printing with dye plants and tree leaves to reveal unique patterns and colors on fabric. “I collaborate with nature to reveal the intricate details of plant life\,” she says. Her studio practice is deeply rooted in sustainability and guided by earth-centered principles. \nKate holds both a BFA and MFA in Studio Art from Indiana University Bloomington. She spent 16 years as an instructional consultant at Indiana University before retiring to focus full time on her studio work. She has studied with internationally recognized master dyers and has been teaching natural dye techniques for over a decade. \n \n \n \n \n \n \nArtists for Climate Awareness is pleased to offer this workshop as part of its series to help artists learn how to use art as a way to bring social awareness to conservation efforts in your communities. \nAs such\, a portion of the workshop fee will go toward a Contributors membership in Artists for Climate Awareness. \n Each participant will be automatically considered a member of Artists for Climate Awareness at the Contributor’s level (equivalent to $35) for one year. Contributors get workshop and event discounts\, news\, an opportunity to publish their artwork on our website\, and enhanced insider participation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Fee: $95 for non-members; $70 for current ACA members(Not a member? The nonmember workshop fee includes a new annual membership. Already a member? Contact info@artists4earth.org to register.) \n \n Register for the workshop\n \n \n \n \n \n In all its events\, Artists for Climate Awareness provides thematic environmental education\, offering practical ways to get involved locally. As part of this commitment\, a representative from a local nonprofit sustainability organization will be giving a short presentation on how their organization contributes to community-driven environmental initiatives. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n With thanks and appreciation to:
