SUMMARY:“Nature Walk”: music and science come together
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by an early spring outing led by Distinguished IU Biology Professor Roger Hangarter\, this unique musical performance depicts the seasonal re-awakening of nature in southern Indiana. Dr. Hangarter has led IU Student composers on a hike where they observe life in ponds and fields and then compose musical pieces based on their experiences during the hike.  \nDuring the performance\, Professor Hangarter will share images and insights about the wildlife encountered during the hike. \nThese two identical concerts reflect the theme of the Brushes for a Better Planet Co-lab project\, where artists shadow scientists as they conduct their research. The goal is to enhance understanding the world though scientific observation as depicted by art. The Co-lab exhibition is part of the Artists for Climate Awareness Earth Month show at Pillar Arts Alliance in Bloomington\, Indiana.  \nOn behalf of the Student Composers Association at Indiana University\, Jacobs School of Music student composer Thejas Mirle has organized the musical performance based on the creative works and will lead an ensemble in playing the compositions. Composers are Noah Burns\, Jacob Lisiewski\, Alexey Logunov\, and Emmet Lewis. Instrumentalists are TBD. \nThis performance will be right before the Artists for Climate Awareness “Art As Inquiry” art show reception\, which begins at 3:00 pm. \nJoin us as we bring these musical creations to life. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature through the eyes\, words\, and melodies of IU’s talented students and faculty. Mark your calendars and prepare for a memorable journey. \nWith thanks to our sponsors:

SUMMARY:Saving the Hoosier: The Concert
DESCRIPTION:Help people fight to save the Hoosier National Forest and attend “Saving the Hoosier: The Concert”! The event will feature Hoosier musicians Sarah Flint and Jeff Shew\, and audience members will see a sneak peek of scenes from the film and meet narrator Hud Mellencamp. The new documentary film “Saving the Hoosier: The Fight for America’s Forests” is produced by Bloomington-based Women with Guts Productions. With Artists for Climate Awareness as fiscal sponsor for the film\, all donations are tax-deductible. \n\nLearn more and find out how to donate to the project HERE.\nTickets for the concert are $30\, and include beverages and pizza\, generously donated by Pizza X. Audience members will be invited to participate in a sing-along of the Indiana state song that will be used in the film. \nBesides Flint and Shew\, the soundtrack for Saving the Hoosier will include music from Krista Detor\, Carrie Newcomer\, Charlie Jesseph and Busman’s Holiday. \nSaving the Hoosier follows environmental activists who\, through grassroots education and lawsuits\, have successfully protected the Hoosier National Forest from the US Forest Service’s plans for commercial logging and prescribed burns to benefit timber sales. The Save Hoosier National Forest movement has received broad nonpartisan support\, and other Hoosier heavyweights have lent their voice to back activists\, like Angelo Pizzo\, writer and producer of films including Hoosiers and Rudy\, and producer\, educator and activist Anna Strout Eisenberg. \nExecutive producer and founder of Women with Guts Productions Rachael Himsel is hopeful about the impact the film will have on the larger\, national environmental movement: “Indiana has set the stage before by creating crucial policies that protected our woods\, water and air and served as an example to other states. But it hasn’t been enough – our state still has some of the highest rates of pollution in the country. We know that our forests filter and clean our air and water\, and we spoke with scientists who discussed this process in-depth.This film gives voice to the people and groups who are fighting for our forests and our future.” \nHimsel and the crew have been working on the film for more than a year\, completing more than a dozen interviews with scientists\, activists and political leaders including Indiana Governor Mike Braun. David Yosha\, founder of Magnet Films is co-producing the documentary\, with Alex Johnson on camera crew. The production team includes Jennifer Wagner of Mass Ave PR and digital specialist Polina Shumanova. Advisors include Steven Stewart of Protect Our Woods and entertainment marketing executive Frank Chiocchi\, with original artwork by Bonnie Gordon-Lucas. To date\, the entire team has been working pro-bono on the film. Himsel is hopeful that this spotlight on preserving our public lands will help the team reach their fundraising goal. \nJohn Mellencamp has generously agreed to donate use of his music for Saving the Hoosier while Hud Mellencamp\, Duke University graduate and entrepreneur\, will narrate the film. \n“Saving the Hoosier: The Concert” will be held at Pillar Arts Alliance Center in College Mall\, 2894 E. 3rd Street in Bloomington. \nBuy tickets here! https://savingthehoosier.eventbrite.com\nBuy Tickets Here!\n  \nFor more info on the film\, visit SavingTheHoosier.com\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the People\n \nABOUT HUD MELLENCAMP \nHailing from Bloomington\, Indiana\, Hud Mellencamp has always embraced a diverse range of experiences. SUMMARY:Mandalas and Plant Inks Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mandalas—circular designs representing wholeness and unity—appear across cultures and time\, from Tibetan and Native American spiritual traditions to the insights of Carl Jung and Hildegard von Bingen. Used today in art therapy\, personal development\, and mindfulness practices\, mandalas offer a peaceful path inward. \nThere are many personal development approaches that use drawing and collage for gathering ideas and structuring our inner world.  Sometimes these are called “Mapping” or “Story Boards”.  \nThrough guided creative exercises and visual presentations\, participants will explore the symbolic power of shape using a “shape preferential game” inspired by cultural anthropologist Angeles Arrien’s Signs of Life. You’ll learn how your preferences for five universal shapes speak to you\, help to structure your own inner landscape\, and have spoken to people across centuries. \nWorking with a variety of tools and techniques—including homemade plant inks—you’ll design your own personal mandala that reflects your thoughts\, emotions\, and inspirations. All materials will be provided\, though participants are welcome to bring sketchbooks\, favorite media\, and personal imagery for added depth. \nWhether you’re a seasoned artist or a curious beginner\, this workshop invites you to slow down\, reflect\, and create something deeply personal using the circle as a guide. \n \n \n \n \n \n About the instructor:\n \nSara Steffey McQueen\, BWS WSI \nSara’s creative and spiritual practices are deeply intertwined. For over four decades\, Sara has led women’s circles\, ceremonies\, and healing work as a Conductor and Representative in the Sufi community. Many of her efforts help fund global tree-planting efforts through Tree Sisters\, where she also volunteers. \nSara’s artistic journey began in printmaking and grew to encompass a rich love of paper\, especially handmade varieties. Her work often features collage and art journaling\, blending visual storytelling with personal archives and notes. A devoted watercolorist since college\, she captures landscapes and the flow of seasons from her studio\, drawing inspiration from the natural world just beyond her windows. Most recently\, she has been making her own paper and paints from personally-grown or foraged natural materials\, incorporating natural objects into her designs. \nHer pieces speak to the rhythms of Earth and spirit\, inviting reflection\, connection\, and transformation. Sara’s art can be found locally in Bloomington\, Indiana\, and through her website. \n \n \n \n \n \n Education\nIn all its events\, Artists for Climate Awareness provides thematic environmental education\, offering practical ways to get involved locally. As such\, Bridget O’Brien\, MFA painting candidate at Indiana University and grower/processor of natural pigments\, will be delivering a short presentation on how she and a colleague grow plants in the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center‘s Color Field and then process them to make watercolor pigments. By growing and cultivating dyes\, paints\, and mediums\, Bridget strives to further synchronize her artistic practice with the cyclical lives of the plants\, animals\, and habitats that she paints. See Bridget’s biography here. \n \n \n \n \n \n Fee: $60 for non-members\, $40 for Artists for Climate Awareness Contributing/Regular members. See Join – Artists for Climate Awareness to become a member\, and to register for the discount\, please  email art4climate@carolrhodes.net \nAre you a member of Artists for Climate Awareness?\nPlease contact art4climate@carolrhodes.net for member registration. \n \n Register for the workshop (you'll become a member)\n \n \n \n \n \n \nArtists for Climate Awareness is pleased to offer this workshop as part of its series to help artists learn how to use art as a way to bring social awareness to conservation efforts in your communities. \nAs such\, a portion of the workshop fee will go toward a Contributors membership in Artists for Climate Awareness. \n Each participant will be automatically considered a member of Artists for Climate Awareness at the Contributor’s level (equivalent to $35) for one year. Contributors get workshop and event discounts\, news\, a complimentary "Mother Earth" tee shirt\, an opportunity to publish their artwork on our website\, and enhanced insider participation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n With thanks and appreciation to: \n\n \n \n \n Upcoming Workshops and Events

SUMMARY:"Bridging Creativity and Conservation: Using Art to Raise Environmental Awareness and Action"
DESCRIPTION:A talk and exhibition by Avon Waters\nTelling the whole story of Indiana’s natural beauty often requires multiple layers and mediums. ArtNature Consortium\, founded by Indiana Pastel artist Avon Waters\, engages in projects that cross-pollinate art and information\, exposing new audiences to art while also revealing the urgency of responsible conservation. \nIndiana Glacial Lakes\, ArtNature’s latest project\, explores the beautiful\, unique ecosystems of the southernmost glacial lakes on Earth and the pressing conservation challenges they face. Issues like harmful algae blooms and declining water quality threaten the biodiversity\, recreational activities\, property values\, and resilience of these lakes. \nIn his talk\, Avon Waters will share insights on what he and partnering artists and scientists have learned about how art can raise awareness about the critical conservation work needed to protect these ecological treasures. \nArtNature has completed a project called Indiana Waterways: The Art of Conservation\, culminating in a 200+ page book that features a collection of essays from environmentalists\, journalists and storytellers\, along with over 100 pieces of art in a mix of mediums and styles that promote the conservation of Indiana waterways. ArtNature has since partnered with galleries and art museums across the state to share what project artists\, essayists\, and scientists have learned. \nPresented at Arts Alliance Center in College Mall\, Bloomington\, Indiana. Free to all and no registration is required.

SUMMARY:Ceremony for Our Land - Performance by IU Music Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:As part of opening reception of “Distant Thunder” Gallery Exhibition of climate art  \nJoin us for a unique live arts event in Bloomington\, IN at the Arts Alliance Center. \n \nBuilding upon Ceremony for Earth\, which was featured in April 2024\, this interarts collaboration\, led by Grace McKenzie and Daixuan Ai\, IU Jacobs School of Music\, explores how mindfulness practice can deepen the experience of live music – both for performers and listeners. Through this project\, they weave their insights into an immersive\, contemplative performance that invites the audience into a space of stillness and reflection.\n \nAt the heart of this event is an exploration of land\, place\, and belonging. Four artists from diverse backgrounds – spanning different regions of the country and the world – come together in Bloomington\, Indiana\, to engage in a shared inquiry: What significance does this land hold for you? How did you arrive here? How do you care for this land? Who has called it home before you?\n \nThrough a live poetry reading by Wahpe Clifford and Ash Iteska\, accompanied by electronic soundscapes and evocative imagery\, the performance creates a layered\, immersive experience. Every note played is improvised\, making each moment ephemeral and unrepeatable – an experience shaped by presence\, connection\, and reflection.\n \nWe invite you to step into this space\, to listen\, to feel\, and to reflect on the land beneath your feet and the histories it carries.\n \nFREE TO THE PUBLIC

SUMMARY:Workshop: Exploring Values in Wet Pastel
DESCRIPTION:With Avon Waters  \nOffered in conjunction with the gallery show\, “Depictions: Earth\, Life\, and Our Shared Responsibility.” \nMake more dynamic paintings and take your medium to new heights. Indiana artist Avon Waters will be leading this all-day\, hands-on Saturday workshop\, painting scenes in nature. In this workshop\, you learn how to see and use values to make your art impactful while you explore new techniques and refine those you already use. As you work\, you will explore how to connect your art to conservation while you depict nature’s connectivity to life. \nAvon will employ “wet pastel” techniques\, focusing on controlling values – “a tonalistic approach to painting” that works for all 2-D mediums\, although he will work in pastels mixed with specific mediums. This workshop is perfect for those who consider themselves beginning artists to seasoned painters. Because the medium can be worked at varying levels of dryness-to-wetness and can be brushed\, the techniques and processes will resonate with painters who work in watercolor\, gouache\, acrylic\, and oil. See more about wet pastel techniques here: https://thepastelartist.co.uk/painting-with-pastel/ \nBring your own soft pastels. See the SUPPLY LIST. \nAvon Waters is a Pastel Society of America juried member\, the lead artist and contact for the Indiana Waterways Art Project\, and is the CEO of the non-profit\, Art Nature Consortium \nLearn more about Avon Waters at \n\nhttps://www.avonwaters.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/avonwatersfinearts\n Instagram: @avonwatersarts\n\nSee photos of our wet pastel workshop led by Avon Waters in March of 2023.\n \n________________\nFee: $65 for active members of Artists for Climate Awareness or Arts Alliance of Greater Bloomington. SUMMARY:Evoking A Response to Climate Change with the Fine Arts (Online and In-person)
DESCRIPTION:Both online and in-person: Climate change is real. This presentation\, “The Fine Arts: Evoking a Response to Climate Change” is an interplay of scientific and artistic visuals curated and presented by Ben Brabson\, climate scientist and Emeritus Professor of Physics at Indiana University. \n Studies show that using art for communication can raise awareness\, provoke impactful dialogue\, and inspire action about environmental issues. Brabson’s talk includes engaging and artful illustrations that simplify concepts of climate change for ordinary people\, making the concepts more concrete\, meaningful\, and motivating. \nThe intersection of the arts and climate change is a vital and dynamic space where creativity\, expression\, and activism come together. Artists play a crucial role in addressing climate change by harnessing their unique abilities to engage emotions\, challenge perspectives\, and ignite social change. This presentation incorporates several pieces by Artists for Climate Awareness.  \nThe presentation is free and is offered both in-person and online. Those who register to attend virtually will receive a Zoom link. \nRegister for the Event \n\n Artists for Climate Awareness is pleased to offer this workshop as part of its series to help artists learn how to use art as a way to bring social awareness to conservation efforts in your communities. \n\nWith thanks and appreciation to: \n\n\n\n \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Painting Deserts in Watercolor: Nancy Davis Metz with Carol Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Deserts are often overlooked when it comes to changes in climate\, but in fact they are among the most vulnerable places on Earth. Majestic saguaro cacti\, Joshua trees\, and giant sequoia trees are challenged by unusually dry and hot conditions\, increased carbon dioxide\, and invasive plants. Several desert bird species are endangered. \nIn this day-long watercolor workshop\, you will learn how to paint a sunlit desert landscape using a very limited set of colors along with special wet-in-wet and layering techniques. Through the activities you will explore various watercolor properties and how to manipulate them. As you paint\, you will learn how humans are restoring and preserving these important areas of our world and how you can help. \nThe class will be taught both in-person and via Zoom. It is aimed at serving those who are comfortable with beginning watercolor techniques as well as more experienced painters who are interested in expanding their approaches to color management and brushwork. Participants will receive a list of the recommended paints\, along with purchasing options. All participants will provide their own painting supplies (brushes\, palette\, etc.). \nInstructors Nancy Metz and Carol Rhodes will deliver this workshop. \nSee all Ivy Tech CLL classes and register now \nDirect Link to register for “Painting Deserts” workshop \n\nArtists for Climate Awareness is pleased to offer this workshop as part of its series to help artists learn how to use art as a way to bring social awareness to conservation efforts in your communities.\nAs such\, a portion of the workshop fee will go toward a Contributors membership in Artists for Climate Awareness.\n Each participant will be automatically considered a member of Artists for Climate Awareness at the Contributor’s level (equivalent to $35) for one year\, unless declined.
