Used today in art therapy\, personal development\, and mindfulness practices\, mandalas offer a peaceful path inward. \nThere are many personal development approaches that use drawing and collage for gathering ideas and structuring our inner world.  Sometimes these are called “Mapping” or “Story Boards”.  \nThrough guided creative exercises and visual presentations\, participants will explore the symbolic power of shape using a “shape preferential game” inspired by cultural anthropologist Angeles Arrien’s Signs of Life. You’ll learn how your preferences for five universal shapes speak to you\, help to structure your own inner landscape\, and have spoken to people across centuries. \nWorking with a variety of tools and techniques—including homemade plant inks—you’ll design your own personal mandala that reflects your thoughts\, emotions\, and inspirations. For over four decades\, Sara has led women’s circles\, ceremonies\, and healing work as a Conductor and Representative in the Sufi community. Many of her efforts help fund global tree-planting efforts through Tree Sisters\, where she also volunteers. \nSara’s artistic journey began in printmaking and grew to encompass a rich love of paper\, especially handmade varieties. Her work often features collage and art journaling\, blending visual storytelling with personal archives and notes. A devoted watercolorist since college\, she captures landscapes and the flow of seasons from her studio\, drawing inspiration from the natural world just beyond her windows. As a composer\, his music addressed pressing global issues such as systemic racism\, climate change\, intolerance\, and social injustice. His latest works “Gaman” (2017) and “Terra Nostra” (2019) address systemic racism and climate change respectively. As a Grammy-nominated conductor\, based in Seattle\, Christophe Chagnard has led a vast repertoire of symphonic\, operatic\, and ballet works of all styles and periods. He has also spent three decades making the concert hall accessible to all\, addressing the elitist stereotype that plagues this art form. As a guitarist\, he explores a wide array of styles and traditions together in genre-defying creations intended to present an open and inclusive voice that transcends labels. \nChristophe’s pivotal project\, Terra Nostra\, expresses the ways he believes art can impact climate change and education. Indiana artist Avon Waters will be leading this all-day\, hands-on Saturday workshop\, painting scenes in nature. In this workshop\, you learn how to see and use values to make your art impactful while you explore new techniques and refine those you already use. As you work\, you will explore how to connect your art to conservation while you depict nature’s connectivity to life. \nAvon will employ “wet pastel” techniques\, focusing on controlling values – “a tonalistic approach to painting” that works for all 2-D mediums\, although he will work in pastels mixed with specific mediums. This workshop is perfect for those who consider themselves beginning artists to seasoned painters. Because the medium can be worked at varying levels of dryness-to-wetness and can be brushed\, the techniques and processes will resonate with painters who work in watercolor\, gouache\, acrylic\, and oil.
